From the recording You Might Have Been
Lyrics
You Might Have Been
Fingerprints on a glass in the bath
Fog of breath on a mirror
Impressions of a body in the bed next to me
Perfume in my nostrils as I breathe
Sunlight through the window highlights dust in the air
Stirred by your departure; by your sudden flight somewhere
With a magnifying glass and a pencil and a pad
I search for clues of what’s become of you
You don’t leave track; you don’t look back
There is no trace of the face I had memorized
No evidence makes any sense
You might have been; you might have not
The maid asks in to leave clean linen
I cling to the odor of the soiled
I gather hairs left on the pillow
Carefully preserving the spoils
I trace footsteps in the carpet to the door
My hand on the handle, I feel the remnant warm
As I step into the hall, I give one last quiet call
No response as it echoes off empty walls
You don’t leave track; you don’t look back
There is no trace of the face I had memorized
No evidence makes any sense
You might have been; you might have not
